Ellis Island, Gateway to America

Follow in the footsteps of millions of Americans by visiting Ellis Island and the Museum of Immigration. This deeply moving memorial to the people who arrived from distant lands to make America their new home is a highlight of any New York holiday.

The museum offers a humbling taste of how over 12 million immigrants between 1892 – 1954 were not allowed to go free until they had been herded through these halls, weighed, measured and stamped fit for entry. Nearly a quarter of Americans today can trace their ancestors to immigrants who went through these rooms.

To visit Ellis Island on your New York holiday you need to buy a Circle Line – Statue of Liberty ferry ticket at Castle Clinton in Battery Park. Be there as early as possible, tickets go on sale from 8:30am the first ferry is 9:00am and boarding is on a first come, first served basis. The ferry first stops at the Statue of Liberty where most people get off amoreTravel recommends people stay on and visit Ellis Island first and return to the Statue of Liberty in the afternoon and miss some of the crowds.

Disabled access on to the ferry and around Ellis Island and the Museum is good.

On arrival at Ellis Island, walk under the glass and metal canopy to the entrance of the museum which is an ornate and imposing building with copper-domed turrets. The magnificent arched portals must have been very imposing to the arriving immigrants, who were often impoverished and in poor health following arduous sea crossings. There are three floors with permanent exhibitions about the immigration process, the living conditions of detainees and more than 1,000 personal items donated by immigrants and their descendants. On your visit make time for the 30 minute film Island of Hope, Island of Tears. You will learn so much, not just about New York but how millions of people made America their home and the struggle they had to endure to do so.
