peaceful oasis Frick Collection, New York holiday

Garden Court at Frick Collection

There are not many places in the bustle and vibrancy of your New York holiday where you can find a beautiful calmness but the Frick Collection provides just that. The palatial mansion is just one of the reasons for visiting the Frick which is filled with an exquisite collection of 14th – 19th-century old masters, porcelain, furniture and bronzes. The enclosed Palm Court is the perfect oasis on a cold day in New York and the gorgeous garden is a pleasure to admire.

Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919) was Chairman of the Carnegie Steel Corp and has gone down in history as a ruthless businessman, staunchly anti-union and obsessed with acquiring wealth. Frick’s sole interest outside of work was art and his collection is what forms the Frick Collection today. In an uncharacteristically generous move on his death he bequeathed the house and collection to the public.

The Frick collection is not arranged by period or national origin but the way they would have been displayed in a personal home, the notable exceptions are the Boucher Room and the Fragonard Room with the 11 large painting Progress of Love series and beautiful 18th-century French furniture and porcelain. There are British masters (Constable, Gainsborough, Turner, Whistler), Dutch (Rembrandt, Van Eyck, Vermeer), Italian (Titian, Bellini, Veronese) and Spanish (El Greco, Goya). Throughout the rooms are Limoges enamel, Chinese porcelain, Persian carpets and Marie Antoinette’s furniture.

A visit to the Frick sets a different pace than most of New York and the intimacy you feel with these masterpieces tastefully displayed in Frick’s luxurious mansion is very uplifting to the spirit. The enclosed Palm Court is a beautiful serene place, the visitor information is excellent and the shop, although modest has some good books.
