Guggenheim Museum, New York

The dramatic sweeping curves of the Guggenheim’s exterior is one of the most striking features of the only building in New York designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It was commissioned by Solomon R Guggenheim to publicly exhibit his collection of non-objective art but was not finished until 1959, 10 years after his death. Frank Lloyd Wright designed the building so that you would not see any sharp angles or sudden changes of form, it is well worth visiting on your New York holiday.

Whilst the outside is startling, enter and immediately look upwards and you will be awe struck by the tall atrium and central window with a swirling walkway bringing you down the five levels of the building. The best way to experience the Guggenheim and the art it contains is to take the lift to the top floor and then meander down the spiral ramp.

There is good disabled access although there are a few sharp inclines and tight corners and you will need to use your brakes while descending.

The Guggenheim Museum is in Upper East Side Manhattan, close to Central Park, with some great New York hotels nearby, click here to read the amoretavel review of New York Hotels and the excellent prices available with our selected travel partners.

Unlike most institutions dedicated to the visual arts, the Guggenheim does not divide itself into departments devoted to specific mediums or eras. Rather, the collection is conceived as an integrated whole which is continuously enhanced in response to emerging talent. Solomon Guggenheim and his wife abandoned the old masters they first collected and got hooked on the modern works of Kandinsky, Mondrian, Mohol-Nagy, Chagall Leger, Delaunay, and Gleizes.  The Guggenheim Museum’s holdings were dramatically enriched when the foundation received works from the Thannhauser’s prized collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and modern French masterpieces including Pissarro, Vincent van Gogh and Picasso, these are on permanent display.

The Guggenheim is more dramatic than any other museum or gallery, for that reason alone it is worth visiting while on your city break to New York.
