Think of Paris and instantly you conjure up that most iconic of world monuments. The Eiffel Tower is the monument we all think we know and yet on a city break, when we actually see the real thing, we are still taken aback at the glory of its structure. Riding in the fabulous vintage lifts transports us back in time and, when once we stand on the platforms, the views quite take our breath away. The whole of the city of Paris stretches out in front of you. The River Seine flows directly in front of the tower under the Iéna Bridge, and you can see the Trocadero and the Champ de Mars, a large park, with the École Militaire at the other end.

Eiffel Tower Paris - incredible city viewsWhile on your city break you really should try to visit at night. Certainly the best time to take photos is as the sun sets, when the sky is changing colour and the light is kind to cameras. If you don’t venture up the tower at dusk, at least go to the general vicinity. It is quite breath-taking to see the Eiffel Tower shimmering with a million diamond lights all over it, for the first ten minutes of every hour. You really must not miss this on your holiday or city break.

In 1889, when the tower opened, it was the tallest building in the world. It was originally built as a temporary structure for the Exposition Universelle, and was actually derided by many. Now however, the Eiffel Tower is a much loved monument the world over and remains the second tallest building in France.

It is useful to note that the queues are shorter if you visit later in the evening or at night. The Eiffel Tower has several restaurants including the  sumptuous, Le Jules Verne (with its own lift) and has just added a Champagne bar on the top floor. This is the most romantic of city break locations and many a proposal has been made here.
