Rome National Etruscan MuseumOne of the quieter museums for you to visit on a Rome holiday is the National Etruscan Museum. Located in Villa Giulia, a beautiful 16th century palace and once a summer Papal home, The National Etruscan Museum houses a collection of Etruscan and Roman artifacts and sculpture. If leaving the Villa Borghese you can walk through the beautiful gardens or it is easily reachable by public transport. It is a mile between the National Etruscan Museum and Borghese Gallery, so allow plenty of time, especially in the summer heat.

The Etruscans were an early civilization that pre-dates the Roman Empire. They were highly advanced people that lived north of Rome, near what is now Fiesole in Tuscany. Often at war with the inhabitants of the area that is now Rome, the technology often associated with Roman ingenuity was actually born with the Etruscans.

Rome-National-Etruscan-Museum-Euphronios-KraterThe sophisticated culture of the mysterious Etruscans left us with an enormous collection of artifacts including exquisite jewellery, bronze sculptures and terra cotta vases which can now be found in this important museum.

Priceless, ancient treasures include the almost life-sized “Sarcophagus of the Spouses” (Sacrogafo degli Sposi) which dates from the 6th century BC, showing a smiling bride and groom, the statues of  Hecules with a stag and “Dea con Bambino” (“Goddess with a Baby”) and the famous 4th century BC “Cista Ficoroni”, a bronze urn with paw feet.

The Villa Giulia is an old building and only part of the museum is accessible even with use of the stairlift, although they make no charge for wheelchair visitors.
