Rome Holidays, City Breaks - The Spanish StepsWhen on a Rome holiday or City Break  one of the most popular romantic destinations is the ‘The Spanish Steps’.

Continuing in the baroque era tradition of design competitions, the baroque-style Spanish Steps are the result of designs commissioned by the French in 1717. An opulent and glorious staircase was needed to connect the hilltop church of the Trinità dei Monti, which was under the patronage of the Bourbon kings of France at the time, to the Spanish Embassy, which once sat in what is now Piazza Spagna.

The stunning white marble staircase of 135 steps was constructed between the years 1723-1725 and is the world’s widest staircase.

Rome - City Break, Holiday, Hotels - The Spanish StepsCentrally located in Rome, it is dominated by Trinità dei Monti at the top and Piazza Spagna at the bottom. In front of the steps is the posh shopping street of Via dei Condotti. The Spanish Steps are a central gathering place in Rome for tourists and locals alike, and it is very popular to come to sit on the steps and take a break from sight-seeing or to gather with friends. The steps are often in need of restoration and the last one occurred in 1995. As a result, it is no longer permitted to eat on the steps, which used to be a tradition here, in order to maintain the pristine condition of the white marble.

Couples adorn the steps, making it an ideal romantic destination while on your Rome holiday.
